Politics for All is working to get constituencies across the UK to become disability inclusive. We are asking Members of Parliament to take a ‘pledge’, which involves adhering to a set of inclusive practices.

All you need to do is fill in your details below and press send. You can edit your letter to make it more personal.

Dear MP,

As one of your constituents, I am writing to ask you to take a pledge to be a disability inclusive constituency.

Disabled people face extra barriers to engaging with their MP. For example by not providing image descriptions for pictures on social media disabled people are unable to know what their MP is doing each week and by holding an advice surgery in a building that is not wheelchair friendly, disabled people are unable to meet in person with their local MP.

In the UK 25% of the population are disabled, but this is not reflected in the House of Commons. Currently, only 12 MPs are known to be disabled - less than 2%. This means that disabled people can’t see themselves represented and disability issues and policies, such as the government’s proposed cuts to disability benefits, are being discussed without the voices of those it will affect. I believe that by making local politics more inclusive we can make Parliament more representative.

I know that as an MP you value democracy. And so do I. There are thousands and thousands of disabled people in our constituency, and without proper changes to ensure disability inclusion, we risk disenfranchising 1 in 4 constituents from our political system. For example, in a recent survey carried out by the National Autistic Society, only 30% of autistic people said they would be comfortable and confident meeting an MP, councillor or other politician.
